IO1: Operator of Smart and Green/Sustainable Buildings ECVET compliant training curriculum and course material

The project partnership has developed a curriculum and training modules related to the ECVET system for transfer of credits in the vocational education and training. Thanks to it, we have trained more than 200 building operators, property and asset managers in the domains of managing “buildings of the future” in order to maintain required occupants’ comfort and comply with energy efficiency/ecology specifications and regulations. The ECVET based curriculum covers the following areas of knowledge: Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, domotics, service robotics, etc.

The content is devided into three levels:

Operators of IoT-enabled Smart Buildings: Level 1

  • Module 0: General Introduction to the Course
  • Module 1: Fundamentals of building properties useful in monitoring and control for effective operation, occupants’ comfort, energy efficiency
  • Module 2: Fundamentals of Building Management Systems for effective operation, occupants’ comfort, energy efficiency (HVAC, lighting, security, indoor air quality, water distribution/monitoring)
  • Module 3: Fundamentals of Internet-of-Things (IoT) and indicative applications. Opportunities for low-cost operational improvement
  • Module 4: Basics for the operation of smart building using IoTs to improve the flexibility and the intelligence in satisfying human comfort and/or energy efficiency
  • Module 5: Operation & Maintenance Policies and Practices for Sustainable Buildings (measuring energy efficiency, benchmarking energy performance and energy saving, energy savings)

Operators of IoT-enabled Smart Buildings: Level 2

  • Module 1: Selection of IoT equipment for optimal energy efficient building automation
  • Module 2: Optimisation strategies to meet quality of service criteria
  • Module 3: Building scoping towards operational improvements
  • Module 4: Preventive and predictive maintenance and troubleshooting principles, damage control
  • Module 5: Diagnostics for smart buildings
  • Module 6: Enhanced automation and reduction of human intervention

Operators of IoT-enabled Smart Buildings: Level 3

  • Module 1: Interdependencies of building operation sub-systems
  • Module 2: Advanced Diagnostics and Control for Smart Buildings
  • Module 3: State-of-the-art operation and maintenance practices for sustainable buildings

The learning activities are related to three domains: Class or 1:1 lecturing with supportive presentation material; Web/Mobile self-learning and Web/Mobile platform to support class learning.

For each module number of teaching methods are used: Lecture method; Discussion method; Programmed instruction method; Study assignment method; Tutorial method; Seminar method; Demonstration method; Buzz group method (imaginative ideas, opinions, stimulate thinking); Brainstorming and Role-playing. Among used techniques, the involved VET trainers used Theoretic presentations ; Demonstration at dedicated labs; Practical assignments; Post-tests and Discussions.

Transferability potential: This output could be customised to be used by other technicians in VET as well as to be integrated in Higher education courses.

IO2: Job profile of: Operator of Smart and Green/Sustainable Buildings (OPERATOR OF THE 21ST CENTURY)

The main outcome from this outputs is a document, which provides a synopsis of the framework for the creation and accreditation of the new job profile (specialty) of Operator of Smart and Green/Sustainable Buildings in Serbia, Bulgaria and Cyprus. It defines the knowledge, skills and professional competences, which the VET trainee have obtained at the end of the training. This guarantees that the trainee posesses all that is needed to practice the profession. Furthermore, the synopsis summarises the personal assets, as well as the thematic areas, which are included in the content creation of the training modules under IO1: Operator of Smart and Green/Sustainable Buildings ECVET compliant training curriculum and course material.

The profile has the following domains: Minimum age, Educational background, Objectives of the training in the field of compulsory vocational training, Objectives of the training in the field of compulsory vocational training, Description of the speciality field, Previous work experience, Preliminary set of personal qualities, Possible work environments, Possible positions under National classification of professions (existing), Possible business hours, Specific equipment required, Requirements for the training environment, Requirements for the practical training implementation and requirements for the qualification of the VET trainers who are delivering the course. The profile also consist of the list of descriptors in terms of general, transversal and specific learning outcomes, which the person will acquire upon successful completion of the training programme.

With this profile we provided holistic and sustainable understanding of the responsibilities, of those who mainatain the built environment in relation to Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, domotics, service robotics. It provides extended opportunities for further qualification of building operators, property and asset managers as well as to qualify jobseekers who are seeking for a job realisation in that field. We have strengthened collaboration between all “key players” – institution which are involved in the process from training to employment of building operators. We have provided opportunity for further qualification, continuing qualification and pre-qualification of technicians and service providers etc. and it has a direct impact on the continuous VET learning in line with the dynamics of the employment and career growth of the above mentioned target users.

In Serbia, the new profession is implemented under the code 5153 Housekeepers in residential and commercial buildings, 5153.0 7 Smart building operator, according to ISCO-08 classification. The approval of new professional profiles is performed by Chamber of Commerce of Serbia.

In Bulgaria is implemented as a new specialty with a code 5230101 Smart-Buildings technical operator under the profession 523010 Communication systems technician as part of vocational field 523 Electronics, automation, communications and computer equipment (according to the List of professions for vocational education and training).

In Cyprus, the new profession is implemented under the code 3136 (draft) Smart and Green/Sustainable Buildings Operators according to ISCO-08 classification: under the code 313 Process control technicians and according to NACE classification under M71.1.2 Engineering activities and related technical consultancy. The approval of new professional profiles is still ongoing by the appointed “Sectoral Technical Committee of Professional Qualification”, which comprises members of policy making organisations and relevant umbrella bodies, as well as an Observation Committee.

Transferability potential: The ECVET learning outcomes of this output could be added as transversal outcomes of other technical job profiles in VET.

IO3: Mobile Learning Management System including training (interactive) videos to facilitate the understanding of concepts and examples and pre/self/post assessment

Two mobile apps have been developed (one for Android devices and another one for iOS devices) in order to facilitate the self-planning, self-learning and independent use of the project intellectual outputs by the VET trainees and VET trainers. The apps offer simple, intuitive and self-explained user interface, thus removing usage stress and subsequently increasing adoptability by all types of users. The apps are enabling the 24/7 access to learning content developed in the framework of IO1 and 2. Equally, a synchronised online version in all partner languages is available at https://smart-building-operator.eu/elearning/.

In addition, a semantic-based-search-interoperability layer was embedded in the apps, in order to support a more customised learning experience. That is, the trainees are able to create their profiles using semantic annotation technologies in order to characterise their learning needs using a pre-defined knowledge graph database-existing knowledge models (RDF/OWL-based) were reused and extended within the project. In addition, the learning content, as well as the learning process was also semantically annotated and searchable through the app. This enabled the semantic matching between learning demand and supply (executed through SPARQL queries) and subsequently enhanced the provision of learning content through the app, that matches exactly the personality and the learning needs of the trainee.
